Writing about majors in essays...

Hello all,

Some of the schools I'm applying to ask questions about why I am interested in the majors I chose. My questions or problems with this part of the application are:
1) Often I put down CS, Applied Math and Applied Physics as my majors; however, the latter two seem very similar (to me, or at least the reason why I choose them). Should I omit either of the two? Would it sound repetitive if I talk about the two, or not too specific if I give one reason for both?
2) By the end of the summer I had read a few books that changed my views on the environment, that is, made me interested in the topic. Now as it was the beginning of my senior year, I had done nothing during my life regarding the environment (no clubs or activities) and have no time to start working on environmental activities (worthy of mentioning) due to my busy schedule (for these first few months). Nonetheless, environmental engineering is a field of study I would like to explore in college and I do consider it as a possible major/minor (if I were to like it). Should I mention my newly acquired interest in the environment even if I have nothing tangible to back it up? I would talk about how my opinion on the subject changed that summer and what it is now that interests me.

Thanks for your help!

It sounds like you’re undecided. That’s the case for you and half the students that apply for admissions. Of the half who are decided half change their minds by the time they graduate. So perhaps you should take the tack of explaining what it is about these fields that interest you – not necessarily possible major by possible major – but rather what is the common denominator. Talk about what you’ve done in high school or through extra curricular reading and work that has lead you to consider these majors as possible career choices.
