Writing about passions

I've read a couple of those "how to write a college admissions essay" books, and they always say you should write about something you're passionate about.

What does this mean exactly? Does it mean you're supposed to write about your favorite subject or extracurricular activity? My current probable Common App essay has nothing to do with either of those things - it's just a topic I thought would be fun, and I think the essay shows my personality reasonably well.

If I don't write about my interests (academic or otherwise), will it look like the essay doesn't go with the rest of the application or something?

Thanks!

No you don’t need to write about your academics or EC’s if you have another idea. Showing your personality and other qualities are primary. My daughter did mention her EC but it wasn’t exactly the primary focus and it she didn’t talk about details of what she did. She did show her priorities, for ability to work hard, ability to communicate well with others, analytical mind…

I would ignore those “how to” books. A well written essay that shows your personality and positive traits is exactly what you should be writing. If that happens to include your passions, then it’s fine. And if it doesn’t, that’s fine as well.
