Writing and My ACT Composite Score?

Composite: 34
English section: 35

However, with my poor writing score (8), my English/Writing combined is 31.

Several questions
1.) Does the essay score change my composite?
2.) Is there any way to use my English score and totally leave out writing when applying to colleges etc.?
Thanks so much!

1) The essay does not affect the composite; however it well effect your English subscore

1 - It does not affect your composite.
2 - No. Most colleges want ACT with writing. The writing score does not affect your English subscore. It is part of the combined English/Writing score which you have as 31. That is still a good score and in the 98th percentile I believe.

Darn it. I can’t seem to get any higher than an 8 on my essay, no matter what. I guess it sucks to be good at English and bad at writing…at least my composite stays untouched.

So if the essay must be included, what do colleges do with people who take the ACT without writing?

The English section affects the composite and the Essay affects the English section so wouldn’t the Essay affect the composite?
A=B , B=C hence A=C :smiley:
No?

The writing section does not affect the English section score. The writing section has it’s own score and it is combined with the English score to provide a “extra” score.

The ACT has:
Composite (Math, Science, Reading, English)
Math
Science
Reading
English
and an optional writing score.

The ACT provides a combined English/writing score too if the test contained the optional writing. Some school admins may use this score but from what I’ve heard more look mainly at the composite or the math and English scores.
