Writing Associates program

Good article in this week's Phoenix about the WA program at Swarthmore, an excellent program that doesn't get enough attention, IMO.

For any "specs" not familiar with the WA program, students submit drafts of papers to Writing Associates for critique and suggestions before turning in a final version.

Student WA's take a special semester long advanced writing course before becoming peer mentors.

It is a great program that gets used a lot a Swarthmore. After two years, my daughter said that she has only turned in one paper that she didn't get WA'd first.

The article says that the Writing Center reviews papers from 32% to 35% of the students at Swarthmore each year -- really an astonishly high number considering that you have a get a draft done at least a day early to allow time for comments and revisions.

Some Swat classes have mandatory WA reviews built into the paper schedule.
