Hi, I’m a rising senior trying to start my common app. I have a couple of ideas, but not sure which one to pick. One of them involves my phobia of vomiting. I know we should stay away from mental illnesses etc. but the topic is of personal importance to me. I would not focus on the fear itself so much as how I have learned to face it head on (instead of hiding from it by taking excessive preventation measures). The lesson would be to confront your fear instead of hiding which can be applied to other life lessons. Should I write about this or is it better to write about something else?
Better to choose a different topic. Unless you are an exceptionally good writer, I can’t see and admissions officer warming to this. Remember, you are selling yourself.
^^^this. Just the image of that then having to read your essay. I am trying to think how can you spin that? But essays on overcoming X are very common. You want to stand out and let the university know about you.
Great advice. Personally I would rather read an essay that started something like this. “Some days I just like to sit around and think about…”
