I won first place in state for a writing contest. Should i send this as an art supplement to colleges. Does this qualify as "exceptionally talented"? I'm not sure if this would help my application or if it's a waste of time. Thank you :)

Different schools have different rules for arts supplements, depending upon the programs they offer. Sometimes “arts supplements” are only in music, painting, dance, etc. The rationale for them is that some applicants who are superb musicians, painters, sculptors, etc. may not do as well in straight academic courses, whereas people who are excellent writers usually excel in traditional academic subjects, at least in the humanities/social sciences, and do well on their SATs.

But anyhow, check the English Department websites at the schools where you’re applying. If they offer creative writing or journalism courses, or a creative writing specialization in the major, then you should definitely submit your essay. Make it clear right at the top of the first page that it won a prize.

If in doubt, I think you should submit your essay anyway, since it certainly won’t do you any harm. However, it may not be evaluated as an arts supplement.

I disagree with the above poster. Unless you have an exceptional writing portfolio, not a single piece, there’s no reason to submit your writing. Your prize will be listed under Awards and Honors and receive its full due.

Thank you. I think you’re right. It’s only a single piece that won and I don’t plan on studying creative writing.
