The Ivy League schools all have pretty fantastic writing programs. Iowa U and Kenyon have excellent programs geared toward writing and literature, too. Boston U and John Hopkins are pretty great, as well. And, as you mentioned, Hamilton.

Look for small liberal arts colleges like Amherst and you should find pretty good writing and literature programs every which way.

Yes, The University of Iowa should definitely be on your list.

Besides the strength of the writing program and english dept., Iowa has a very nice campus, friendly people, strong academics, and great school spirit, all at a reasonable price (Fiske Best Buy).

I attend Carnegie Mellon and the creative writing program here is very good. I wouldn’t say the same for general English though. The best are of course the Ivy schools and top liberal arts colleges. According to rankings, Berkeley has the number one graduate school for English so you might want to consider that too.

Knox College has a strong emphasis on writing and has a disproportionate number of creative writing majors. Midwest students who are interested in writing usually have Knox and the University of Iowa high on their lists.
