Writing/Journalism Transfer

I posted a similar thread in the UF forum, just waiting for responses. I'm looking to transfer from FIU since they don't really offer a creative writing major, among other reasons. I'm trying to decide if I should transfer to FSU or UF for writing/journalism. I'd like to be a novelist some day, so the quality of the program is important. I do plan on working in journalism to support myself, however.

So, what do you guys think? Should I go to the school with a slightly better creative writing program but no journalism program or the school with a decent writing program and a great journalism program?

Thanks in advance. Also, I don't care about sports, prestige, or rankings outside of my major. I don't want this to be a typical FSU vs. UF thread, I know they are both great in certain fields. I'm just trying to figure out which would be a better option considering my interests.

30 views and no thoughts? :</p>

I know a lot about degrees in science, human science, education, math. But I can’t tell you much about Creative Writing/Journalism. I can google info, as can you. I have no personal knowledge to share. I know the writing major at FSU is very strong, and that journalism in general is not a great career path right now with the downsizing of print communications (newspapers, magazines and the like). Otherwise, we tend to post when we know about things personally. Good luck. Someone will chime in. Just keep bumping up.

Thank you for the reply, sorry if I seemed impatient. I’ve been hearing that print journalism is a sinking ship as of late, with experienced journalists being let go. I think I would prefer working for an online news blog, though I am not sure what kind of salary a Gawker or Salon employee would make.

FSU’s creative writing program is probably more than “slightly” better than the one at UF.

Maybe you could combine the degree with some work in education, communications or even an interdisciplinary program.

Thanks parent2noles. So if their Grad programs are great for writing, do you think that trickles down to undergrad? If so, then I think it would be the best choice. Maybe I could even go to grad school there too (when/if Iowa doesn’t work out).

Thanks again!

Yes, I think so.

The excellent professors attract better grad students who in turn influence the undergrads. The same profs frequently teach undergrads as well.

There is an argument against academic “inbreeding”, which you should consider, when grad school time comes around. The faculty in the department could be of help advising you when planning your education.
