Writing MC Question

Every student (at the party) tried (to look) (their) (best).

A) at the party
B) to look
C) their
D) best
E) no error

I thought "no error" because I thought there was no problem with the sentence but the answer is "their".
Is it wrong to replace "his or her" with their?

It is correct to replace “his or her” with “their” because “student” is singular, and must have a singular pronoun “his or her” to match it.

when you use “every” or “any” you have to use a singular pronoun

Their is wrong because it’s a plural word form. His or her works better.
