I’m struggling to find essay topics for my coalition application and I was wondering if it would be too superficial to write about my height? I am 5’ exactly and I’d write about the challenge of earning respect and not being treated as a kid and things like that. Thanks!
I think that sounds fine as a topic. Show how you’ve overcome this perceived problem. Google “hack the college essay” - you will fiind good tips there.
OP, my 6’ daughter wrote about her height as her common app essay with excellent results (got into her SCEA school). She was serious about the topic, but sprinkled some humor in it too.
I like it, the reader should get a good idea of who you are and how you think.
Whatever you write about make it personal, unique and interesting. Since you just heard someone else write about height give it your own spin on it. As stated above they the reader need to find out about “you”… Not just your height per se…
I like it. I think if you can include humor within the essay and show that you are positive about your height within it’s challenges and without a chip on your shoulder it could be great.
My son wrote about being vertically challenged (5’2”) and a pole vaulter in HS. As long as you make it personal, it is a very good topic.
Where will OP apply?
You do want the topic to be relevant to life in college and on campus, let them see the attributes they want. Think how can you do this. Earnng respect vis-a-vis your height may be hard to “show, not just tell.” In @Gumbymom’s case, see how he tied it to something a bit more? Even from her few words, we can imagine the work, determination, and commitment involved.
If you do find this tie-in, you want it to make sense to adcoms, show the traits they look for, in their community.
^ do this. Look up school moto and mission statement.
Just saying, it’s more than the motto and mission. It gets more specific.
I get that but it’s a place to start to see if you fit the school’s philosophy. Then intertwine that in the essay.
