I'm happy to know that I wasn't the only person who was surprised by his/her writing score on this test. (What happened? Why did so many people do worse than they expected?!)

I'm so ticked about my writing score...

I got an 800 (12 Essay and 80 multiple choice) in the writing last time, but I retook to get a higher score in the reading. Sure enough, on this testing my reading went up, but my writing plummeted to a 710, 70 multiple choice + 10 essay! I don't remember having trouble with ANY of the questions.... I don't know what happened! Grr!!!

i think the main issue is people think they did better than they actually did.
lots of questions were tricky and from the other threads, it seemed like everybody had different answers. i, like most of you, thought i did fine, and yet i didnt get a poor score. i highly doubt that there was a scoring error, so either people mistakenly thought they did well or they are deceiving themselves into believing there was a scoring error to appease their frustration.

Heinoushighness: I'm not saying there were grading errors, per se. However, I do find something extremely suspicious about these scores. Let me explain why.

With each testing, of course, you always find a group of people who thought they scored higher than they actually did. But for this particular testing, there have been an unexplainably large number of threads created in the last few days that have completely focused on the surprisingly low writing scores on this test, not to mention posts in other threads that bring up this hot issue.

Thread count:
1) "So writing, what's our conclusion?"
2) The "People who scored less then they thought in writing" thread
3) "Writing section - Low scores.. Why!!"
4) ***writing"?????????????
And, of course, this thread...

And this list only includes the threads with titles that specifically and explicitly state the topic. I didn't waste my time checking out the threads entitled, "I did badly" and the like, which very well could have referred to low scores in the writing section, given the strange trend that seems to have occurred here.

5 threads, in two days, that have completely focused on this strange writing score phenomenon. While it's true that some people do overestimate their SAT scores, I don't see even ONE thread detailing surprisingly low scores in math or reading this time around....

I don't know... It just seems suspicious to me...

What does this mean? Collegeboard made a mistake?

I also got a surprisingly low writing score!! I consistently score 740-760 for my writing component, but for the October sitting I got a 650 and and 8 essay!!!!!! I'm really bummed! :(

jlauer:
Well here's one....My d's scores dropped over 180 points! 100 in the verbal section -- which is her strong point. Writing was down, but not nearly as much. Math also had an unexpected drop. We were all totally surprised. We would have considered a slight drop in the math -- but not such a difference in the verbal!!!

I wrote more on the parent forum, but it is interesting to see so many concerns here as well.

i dropped in math too - an inexplicably 100 points from 750 to 640. in cr, i dropped 10. and in writing, my mc dropped from 720 to 670.

then again, i think what we're seeing is just the result of a couple loud people and a self-reinforcing phenomenon on CC, and probably nothing more.

logic's telling me to stop wasting my time replying to these threads...

um, got a 790; I'm pretty sure the 5 NO ERROR choices we choose were correct. I know the one I got wrong was one of the questions about the castle paragraph.

I mean, I'm satisfied with that but it's strange because I've been averaging 74-80 on every practice test (MC wise). The essay system was fine, though...mine this time was complete trash, I was lucky to get a 10. But yeah, MC I was expecting a bit higher....oh well, it makes up for the 680, which was a complete shock, in math.
