Do any schools at all look at the writing? If you get a 12 does that at least give you a nice nudge or do they not even look differently at someone who got a 12 than someone who got an 8? If that is the case..why do they even have the writing?!?!? Someone has to be looking at it! I would hope a 12 would have to get you something! At least if you write a fab essay for admission they would believe you actually wrote it?!? :)

People here on CC devalue the ACT writing. However, it is important; a 12 will give you a nice nudge. However, if you don’t do well on it, it will not severely ruin your chances for admissions.

Yes, some colleges use the writing section to compare your admissions essay to. A person with a 6 on the ACT writing who writes an out-of-this-world essay will probably be questioned. You can check this on Collegeborad’s website. For example, Vanderbilt University uses both the ACT and SAT writing to verify your writing ability in comparison to your admissions essays:

Also, for MIT admissions anyways, acceptance rates generally increased with higher ACT essay scores. I think this might be caused by the fact that the people who wrote better essays in the ACT can write better application essays as well, but who knows. Maybe it’s a factor.
