WHAT?

ya, all UC's and most schools require this.

is it hard?

if you dont get a 680 or higher on your writing SAT or if you dont pass an english AP with a 3 or higher. you have to take a placement exam.

ya i know, but there's no information on where we should take the test. it's pretty dumb that they don't post it on their website ==

No Ill tell you whats dumb... its dumb that we have to pay 65 dollars for it... thats what dumb

whats dumb is that theres only one day to take it...no other option.
i got a 670 in writing :\
i got a letter about it too. i have to take it at my HS which isnt bad, but the fact that theres only ONE day to take it is..well its BS! they didnt really give you that much notice either. rawwr

so you received a letter that you'll be taking at your HS? how come i didn't get one. i was wondering where i'll be taking it.

I agree with you 100% bananaslug that IS pretty dumb

bananaslug, the test is really really easy. I took it last year at the end of AP English and the writing prompt was very easy to understand. No need to study or anything. The writing placement exam is much easier than the SAT writing, and it looks like you did just fine on that.

haha yeah I am not all that worried about the actual exam.
its just that I have prom that night, which means i had to move around my work schedule. my boss was very adament that i had to work that saturday, and the only option was to work in the morning. meaning I could fight this out with my boss and be potentially fired, or not take it. hmmm.

and hey! how come I didnt have the opportunity to take it last year? bahh

Ouch. That is a bad situation. Surely one of the two parties could have some sympathy for you, UCSC or your boss.

Maybe you could just tell UCSC flat out that your far too busy and ask for the exam rescheduled?

honestly, it is better to choose college over work. If they like you working there, then they're not going to fire you over something school related. That's ridiculous! You're going to be at college for the next 4 years, work will be over by fall... right? If they fire you, get a new job... where management is flexible and courteous and realizes that you are a student before an employee

yeah I talked to her and she calmed down once she realized I was trying to get out of work for prom. (I brought in my letter and a copy of my email) so everything is good :)

thanks guys

I didn't even get an e-mail or something in the mail about this. Thankfully I heard it from my friend before it was too late.

do they only send you the email about this test if you've already submitted you're SIR? i didn't pass any of the requirements it listed but still haven't received any sort of notification about taking this test.

Yeah this writing test is confusing the sh_t out of UCSC students. There is no notifications as far as I can tell and I cannot imagine that everyone is going to know to take the exam on May 10. I might call up UCSC tomorrow and get some information.

As far as I can tell, if you have 680 and above on the SAT writing portion, it means you are exempt from the requirement.

yeah...I got an email about summer orientation which had 3 attachments. after reading through the first and third ones, I read the 2nd which had a lot of extra FAQs on the bottom. I found a little blurb about it and then pretty much NOTHING until the letter they sent me about it. thats it. so if you havent accepted, thats probably why they havent sent you anything.

Slug, I accepted but have not got anything to date. How soon after you accepted did you get this email. It has been four days so far. Thanks :)

Ahh, last year the test was also on my prom day. It's real fun waking up at 7 in the morning to get to the test site to write some really simple essay (I agree, it's 10x easier than the SAT's prompt). THEN have to start worrying about prom afterwards. But really, don't think too highly of this test.. I did no studying whatsoever (how can you possibly study for an essay, besides vocab?) and passed.

If it was anything like last year, they sent notifications to everyone who was accepted to a UC to take the test and where the test site is. You should be getting an email soon if you haven't fulfilled the requirements. Lastly, if you really cannot take the test that day, you can take it at the UC sometime after you move in and before class starts. Or, at least that's how UCD does it.
