Bryn Mawr has offered an opportunity to review writing portfolios in the application process, and as a hopeful for the creative writing program, I am obviously eager to send one. However, there were no guidelines as to what I should include in such a portfolio. I have looked at other schools' guidelines, but I'm not sure what to follow. Anyone have any experience with this, or know of some basic piece I need to include?

Send examples from two genres: one short fiction piece and a group of (~5) poems; one personal essay and one critical analysis; one (short) play and a couple of chapters from a novel, etc, the permutations are endless. . .but don't overdo it. Send your best work, and perhaps attach a short resume of awards you've won for your writing, etc. Possibly send a letter of recommendation from your writing/English instructor. . .most portfolios require that. Good luck!

Make sure to include a graded analytical paper; that is, if they don't require one already.
