Writing Problem

I don't understand why the answer to this problem is the has right after recently. Can someone please explain why the has is incorrect?

While the effect of disease-causing agents on cigarette smokes has been known for years, only recently HAS the damaging effects of cigarette smoke on second-hand smokers become widely recognized.

“Has” is always singular.
The second “has” is referring to the “damaging effects.”
“Damaging effects” is plural.

Switch the “has” to “have” and your golden :).

ok thanks IceQube
