Writing programs!?

Hi guys so i just finished freshman year. I know that its really important to find a passion and to show that passion in ur college app... and I'm struggling because i just don't know what i'm really good at/ like. Right now i'm kind of okay at writing and I'm considering to make that my main thing for my app. Are there any formidable awards i should get or programs i should be in to make my app better? any clubs? just anything in general i should do if i'm looking at an english major?

any writers out there? lol

Well, esssay competitions are a must!
Make sure you take the AP/IB Eng classes if offered.
I’m sure they’re are plenty of writing programs over the summer so check into those.
At my school we have this awesome club where we write during the meetings and share, consider founding a club like that! Also School Newspaper doesn’t hurt
Hmm I feel like I’m forgetting something

Oh! Basically any prestigious school such as Harvard, Stanford, Yale, etc are the best for English, but! UC Berkeley is pretty high up there as well as UCLA and UCs are a bit easier to get into.

Right now you should be exploring different things so that you can find what you like. Do something for you, it is too early to decide what your college application focus will be.

For writing, aim to be great, not just okay! Join your school’s literary magazine or newspaper. Start keeping a journal. Journal is useful as a writing exercise and for self reflection. It may come in very handy for ideas for essay prompts. Remember that writer’s write, not just think about it, so work on writing. Get used to how to craft a piece through editing. Editing and rewrite is very important. Be a great reader.

Take summer writing workshops. Many are offered on college campuses. Here is one list:

Consider subscribing to Imagine Magazine. Each issue covers a different area of interest. It will expose you to new ideas and areas to explore. Also many of the articles are written by high school students. My daughter was able to write one and sent a copy with her college application (well her adviser did). It is really excellent and has many extras, like each issue has a focus on a different college, info on summer programs, etc.

brownparent did ur d make brown through that? wow amazing

Well she was co-editor of her school Lit magazine. But she got to write this article because of the EC that she was heavily involved in. So I think the EC work was the most impressive thing, and the article was the feather in the cap. She also had a really strong application essay.

BrownParent has given you excellent advice. Next summer would be an ideal time for you to do a summer writing program offered by a college, so start budgeting and noting application deadlines now. This summer would also be a good time to do a little research on writing scholarships and awards. Here’s a link to the Scholastic awards site:
