Writing Q #13 pg 878

Although he played a leading role in planning spacecraft expeditions, Dr. Carl Sagan refused to accept praise for the plans he [designed nor otherwise profiting] from later advancements in space exploration.

A) designed nor otherwise profiting
B) had designed nor otherwise did he profit
C) has designed nor otherwise to have profited
D) designed or otherwise profited
E) had designed or otherwise to profit

Should be D because designed and profited should be parallel. I believe but not 100% sure.

yep, it's d. "designed nor otherwise profiting" makes no sense. You wouldn't say, "My friend ran across the field and singing a song." You'd say "My friend ran across the field and sang a song." Same problem.

Nope. The answer is E. Check your nearest Blue book, it says the answer is E. Don't ask me why though.

Oh, oops. Okay, I misread the question. Yeah, okay, sorry, I was wrong. Yeah, I was wondering about that for a second...

Although he played a leading role in planning spacecraft expeditions, Dr. Carl Sagan refused TO ACCEPT praise for the plans he had designed or otherwise TO PROFIT from later advancements in space exploration.

In other words, he refused to accept praise and he refused to profit from later advancements.

Yeah, I wondered, it wouldn't make sense to say that "he designed or otherwise profited" from something.

Oh I see ya, misread as well.

However grammatically correct, choice E makes just about the worst sentence I've ever heard. And the Blue Book says the difficulty is Medium!

If I get a question like this tomorrow, I'll probably start crying.
