Writing Question lvl5 hard and confusing. Xiggi or someone plz help!!

A Identifying Sentences Errors question from May 2013 Asia Pacific SAT:(SAT in ONE day!! URGENT!!)

Members of the senior staff (A)(may) (B)(have considered) the new employees (C)(threats to) their security; however, (D)(they) had the full support of management. (E) (No Error)

The correct answer is (D). This question is lvl 5.

So let's analyze (D). Pronoun case? (obviously) Check. Reference agreement? they = plural. Exists plural antecent. Check.
Ambiguous reference? There are three possible plural antecedents: "members of the senior staff", "new employees" and "threats".
Is "threats" the antecedent? "threats had the full support of management" makes no sense.
Is "members of the senior staff" the antecedent? Possibly.
Is "new employees" the antecedent? The sentence now reads:
Members of the senior staff may have considered the new employees threats to their security; however, new employees had the full support of management.
Now this sentence is b*******. Change "; however," to "because" and the sentence makes logical sense.
The only possible antecedent is "members of the senior staff". Ambiguous reference? Check.
So can anyone plz tell me what is wrong with (D)?

Isn’t it D because it’s ambiguous to whether the antecedent is members or new employees? I couldn’t quite understand what you were saying in your explanation.

‘they’ could refer to the new employees or the senior staff, it makes the sentence unclear.

My argument is that “new employees” as the antecedent will not make any sense. Notice that there is “however” in the sentence. Trying reading the whole sentence and try explaining what it means.

Then how does the sentence make sense? “However” indicates a contrast of situation. Part 1 of the sentence says that employers think employees as threats. “however”(part 2) employees have the support of management so they really are threats。

I believe what you meant is that the sentence is correct if “however” is replaced with “although”. “However” does not express the same idea as “although”.

“A”, however, “B”

“B”, although, “A”

Ahh, I see. Now I understand what you meant. Read too much into the question. Thanks bestofthebest. While you’re at it would you plz help me answer this question:
