During my most recent trip, I came across a wonderful antique store wandering in the old quarter of the city.

I know wandering is wrong but whats the correct word in its place or should it be removed entirely without replacement?

Wandering isn’t the wrong word; it’s in the wrong place.

A participle is supposed to modify the noun or pronoun that immediately preceeds (or, occasionally, follows) it (but isn’t contained in the participial phrase). In this sentence, then, the suggestion is that the antique store is doing the wandering.

One better way to word this sentence would be, as you suggest, to delete the word wandering entirely. Another would be to say, “Wandering in the old quarter of the city during my most recent trip, I came across a wonderful antique store.” After that long participial phrase (“Wandering…recent trip”), the next noun or pronoun is I. The suggestion here is that I was doing the wandering.

Thanks alot for the pointer.
