Blue Book - pg 418 #34

Which is the best way to deal with sentence 14 (reproduced below)?

The media report the lies, they say it is because they are newsworthy.

A) Leave it as it is.
B) Delete it.
C) Change "report" to "verify".
D) Change "they says it's because" to "saying that".
E) Change "they are newsworthy" to "it is news".

My thinking:
A) is not the answer b/c there isn't a conjunction to connect the two clauses.
B) is not the answer b/c the sentece that follows it needs this sentence.
C) is not the answer because it changes the meaning of the sentence.
D) is not the answer b/c it doesn't fix the problem of "the media report" since media is singular
E) is not the answer lies is plural and it is singular.

What is the correct answer? Why? Scroll Down

It's D. Although it makes sense, it doesn't. It doesnt fix the subject verb error between media and report.

media is the plural form; mediUM is the singular

the problem is that the sentence is a run-on; the only way to fix it with the 5 choices is performing choice D.

Now, I feel stupid.

What about data, data is plural, right? And datum is singular?

yep and yep

i got this question wrong as well... i usually get like 5 wrong... and i have no clue still why its D.
