Writing Question

Long - thought of as (A) - a quiet, stuffy place (B) - where -people (C)- just borrowed books, libraries - have been changing (D)- their images dramatically over the last few years. NO error (E)

The answer to this was B. Can anyone explain why this is so?

B is incorrect because it should be "quiet, stuffy places". That whole clause refers to the subject of sentence (libraries) and therefore needs to be in the plural in order to agree with it.

so it should say...
Thought of as a quiet stuffy places? that doesn't sound right to me :/

Remove the "a" and it makes sense.
