Writing Question

This is a question from those lil' SAT preparation booklet that they give out, and I was wondering if someone can explain the answer to me.

The famous filmmaker had a tendency of changing his recollections, perhaps out of boredom at having to tell interviewers the same story over and over. no error

The answer is of changing and I can kind of tell it sounds wrong...but not quite sure....? So why exactly is it wrong? And what would be the right words to put there?

It should be "to change"...but I'm not sure if I could tell you exactly why.

It should be an infinitive, because "a tendency" refers to a verb that is performed in general, and not at any specific time.

I'm pretty sure that's why, TBH I had no idea what an infinitive was until I took spanish.

I think it could be "to change" or "for changing", but I am not sure.
