<p>b) As one result of its new contract, the fire department can no longer offer overtime pay on weekends.</p>

<p>C, D and E are obviously wrong. Help on understanding why ** is the correct answer will be appreciated!</p>

<p>Note the word “they” in the original sentence. The phrase before that does not modify correctly the “they”. </p>

<p>Choice B eliminates this awkwardness, by using “its” and later using “fire department” to define that. It is the fire department that can no longer offer overtime pay.</p>
