Far AWAY FROM (a) having been a diehard conservative, HOOVER WAS(b), some scholars NOW CONTEND(c), the leading progressive OF HIS DAY(d).</p>

<p>It is (a), I think, because the correct phrase is "far from being...", not "far away from being..."</p>

<p>I am almost certain that the use of "attaining" in the first set of questions was correct. I second DesiBoi's answer to the next question. You can only use "far away" when you are discussing actual physical distance.</p>
