Writing Questions..Again

Ralph's Ivisible man is the story of a nameless young black man who ultimately decides to forge his own identity rather than accept the one assigned to him.

Answer is E. I thought it was C since it should be in the infinitive to be parallel?

Also,

Almost all animals (that hibernate) prepare for (it) during summer (by eating) large amounts of food, (which they convert) to thick layers of fat.

Answer is B but i chose E.... Isn't "it" referring back to animals that hibernate?

28.(Of ancient origin), the game of checkers (was played) in Egypt (during the time) of the pharaohs and (is mentioned) in the writings of Homer and Plato.

Why is this no error? Isn't there a shift of tenses?

(By) the early 1920's, Armstrong recorded (his first) solos as a member of King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band in (such pieces as) "chimes blues" and tears", (which) he composed with pianist lil hardin.

Why is the answer A?!

The “it” does not refer to the animals; “it” refers to the hiberation. As such, “it” in the context is ambiguous with no mention of the antecedent (the hibernation).

The first part describes when the game was played; the second part describes where the game is mentioned (present simple tense if I remember correctly).

I got this wrong as well when I did the test. Because the context describes Armstrong recording his first solos instead of how many he had recorded, “by” is not the right word. “In” or “During” should take its place.

mmm silver/crazy care to give some input?

17) I remember getting this one wrong at one point, too. It’s not a parallel structure error because it’s “…man who ultimately DECIDES to forge his own identity rather than ACCEPT the one assigned to him,”
he “decides” to do this rather than “accept” that.
