Writing Questions

Question 1.

Why is the answer "to celebrate" and not "for its celebration" besides the fact that the first one is shorter?

The underlined part in parentheses.

When the Berlin Wall, long a symbol of the Cold War, began to be torn down in 1989, five million people went to Berlin (to celebrate that).

Question 2.

Why is this sentence correct as it is. I thought "were" should be changed to "was" because the action is singular, "tapping their last reserves of energy"

Only by tapping their last reserves of energy were the team members able to salvage what was beginning to look like a lost cause.

Thanks for the help.

I understand it...but I can't put it into words. I'll think about that.

The were goes with "the team members," not the "tapping."
The team members were able to salvage what was beginning to look like a lost cause only by tapping their last reserves of energy.

i dont see how that works, what noun does that specifically points to?
i think went to Berlin to celebrate such -something- is better.

i agree with the subj on members.
