OK, these are from the Barron's workbook for the Writing.

Greta Garbo, the sentsational and talented Hollywood star of the I 1930s*, became a recluse for most of her life and I remained* isolated but I looking* IBeautifully* until the day she died.

The correct answer is D because "looking" is a linking verb, so it should be beautiful, not beautifully. I understand that barron is indeed correct on that, but isn't C also wrong? Shouldn't "looking" stay parallel to "became" because the sentence is a list of her past actions?

The experience of taking a car on the road with a driving teacher fosters learning far more useful than that which results as students sit through a dull lecture.

Obviously, the answer is the underlined "as," which should be replaced with "when" or "while". I don't understand. Can someone explain to me when you use "as" and when you use "when"?

1) hmm...weird wording. I think barron's made a mistake which is exactly why you should use official questions.
2) It's more idiomatic to say when.

B is correct because "became..remained "
the word 'but' in this case, indicates that the word has to be an adjective because " remained isolated but beautiful.
"...remained smart but clumsy."
mm the word looking...crap lol, idk looking cant modify beautiful =S
2. context in a way, "as" doesnt make sense =S

with 1, I would fix more than one thing. lol

for 1, I guess you could say "she remained looking beautiful", but I'm not so sure if it's parallel with "isolated". Is it just a bad question then?

Ren: If you looked in a beautiful way, then it's looked beautifully. But if you appeared to be beautiful, then you looked beautiful.

I looked dutiful as I stood there guarding the precious jewels.
I looked dutifully for the precious jewels that I lost.

It's sort of a bad question. The best way to phrase the sentence is this:

"Greta Garbo, the sensational and talented Hollywood star of the 1930s, became a recluse for most of her life and remained isolated but beautiful until the day she died."

That clears up all the ambiguity!
