London differs from other cities, such as Paris and New York, in that its shopping areas are so widely spread out.
How come the answer is not "in that"?

The architect's research shows that even when builders (construct) houses (of stone), they (still) use the hammer more than (any tool)
Answer: any tool

The television (has received) many complaints (about) the clothing advertisements, (which some) viewers condemn (to be) tasteless
Answer: to be

Hmmm, not sure about number one. I thought it was the one with ‘for’…can someone clarify?

There is nothing wrong with ‘in that’
It should be ‘any other tool’ - any tool refers to hammer as well.
And the last should be ‘as’ tasteless. People condemn thing as tasteless not to be tasteless.

For the first one, i do not understand why it is d. I would have said C because “for…” is a conjunction to be placed after the comma, whereas “since,” is a subordination clause and therefore, it makes the clause after the semicolon dependent.

In that is just another way of saying “because”. So its perfectly acceptable.

It should be any other tool.

I don’t know how to explain that, but it should be “as” instead of “to be”

1) is a bad problem. Is it BB? The original error in the sentence is the use of the comma. The comma should be replaced by a semicolon because the sentence is made of 2 independent clauses. However, in answer (d), the use of “since” gets rid of the need for a semicolon by turning the second half into a dependent clause. Therefore, the use of the semicolon is wrong.

The answer is C, not D.

Yea sorry about that it is C for number 1 and thanks everyone for all the explanations
