^why is A correct?

I think it should be A for the first one and then C for the second. It’s quite possible that there’s an error in the book for the second question, although I guess it depends which book you’re using.

For the first question:
You have to use a semicolon to separate two independent clauses, which the two halves of the sentence are supposed to be. That eliminates all but A and D, and right away you’ll notice that D sounds very awkward and is the wrong verb tense, so you can eliminate that. You’re then left with A, which works but does sound a little off (in my opinion). If B had a semicolon instead of a comma, that would probably be better, but as written the question’s answer can only be A.

I can’t find a way to justify A for the second question though. Are you sure that’s right? I’m fairly certain that the answer for that should be C.

SOURCE: I had perfect writing multiple choice twice.

A is correct because B is a comma splice.

It just sounds better. I don’t have a logical grammatical reason, but C, if you read it sounds a bit awkward.

B is a run-on. You can’t use a comma with those two independent sentences without any conjunction. Therefore, it is not grammatically correct.

I agree with F0ssil in that there must be something wrong with the answer to that question. Choice C is not awkwardly worded; in fact, it is most definitely better written then choice A because it’s more succinct, and in SAT Writing Section, the choice has to be not only grammatically correct but also the most succinct. I don’t really know why the answer is A.

Okay, I take back my answer for number 2. It does sound a bit awkward. Actually the whole question sounds awkward, so nvm!
