Does AP English Literature or Language provide any way out of the writing class requirement?

SAT score plus placement exam or faculty adviser’s grant of exemption were alternative ways to meet the writing requirement in past years. Not sure if that is still the case. I don’t believe AP classes were ever an option.

I believe all freshmen are required to take Writing 5 and a Writing Seminar now. Previously, a high SAT writing score would exempt a student from the requirements.

If you look back through the various first-year information pages, it does appear that the SAT exemption is a thing of the past. I’m going to say that’s a good thing. Humanities 110 (no exemptions) was and is a core requirement/shared experience at Reed. I think the writing/humanities seminars can/should serve the same role at Dartmouth.

The given AP credit chart itself doesn’t give any exemptions (heck, the English APs aren’t even listed!) so you definitely have to fulfill the writing class requirements.

When S entered, in '08, a high CR score exempted one from Writing 5, but NOT from the writing seminar. APs were irrelevant.
