So, I've been surfing around Davidson's website, and I discovered their merit scholarships, including the writing scholarship:

Patricia Cornwell Scholarship
Annual Award Amount: $20,000
Number Awarded: One in each first-year class
Eligibility: This scholarship is awarded to a student with exceptional ability and promise in writing.
Application: Students must submit a statement on the role of writing in their lives, along with ten pages of their best work in the genre(s) of their choice.

Does anyone know about this scholarship? Is it extremely competitive? Has anyone applied for it? What types of materials did you submit? Any type of general info would be much appreciated.

I’m into journalistic writing so I sent a bunch of articles I did for my school paper. I was a little worried that I should have had a variety, but I didn’t get to talk to anyone else who applied for it.

Not sure if I did the right thing, but I sent in samples of all the genres I do =\ poetry, fiction, reflective essay, and journalism.
Does anyone know when we hear back? Scholars Weekend is April 16-18 - should we have heard by now? (Or do we all just show up for that weekend…?)

Sorry–I just don’t buy that explanation! They’ve had the applications since Jan 2. I think it is extremely unfair to expect applicants to wait until after April 18 to find out if they are receiving scholarship money. I think Davidson drags out the process so that applicants stay interested in Davidson, continuing to think we have a chance at money. Other schools are beginning to look more attractive since I know where I stand with them. I’m ready for the emotional hostage to be over.

Haha I buy it, I’m afraid. They’re a bit understaffed, even though applications are pouring in so much more each year. Also, don’t forget that these admissions officers go through all of their applications (probably more carefully/thoughtfully than at most other schools), plus deal with the scholarship stuff, plus go around the country trying to attract interest, plus arrange tours of the campus, plus plan programs…the list goes on. They’ve got a lot to do…

Have any of you heard anything new from Davidson?

I received a letter from the director of merit programs dated the 16th of March last week, saying that I did not make the finalist cut but that I “will be a welcome addition to any writing community.”

I was wondering if anyone else got this letter?

I applied for the science scholarship, and I hadn’t heard anything so I e-mailed the Director of Merit Programs. She said that I wasn’t getting anything. She also said the endowment took a big hit and they weren’t offering a lot of people scholarships this year that deserved them. So basically if you haven’t heard by now it’s pretty unlikely you received anything. :(

I don’t know. I do know that I applied for the Belk Scholarship and I didn’t get the rejection letter till about a week and a half after everyone else had heard. I assume I will get some sort of letter soon, I was just getting anxious because I kept reading that people were notified that they were finalists. It really stinks that the class of 2013 does not have the same scholarship opportunities as all of the previous years because of the horrible economy. Now I have to take out a 200k loan. woohoo.
