Writing Score Low, Should I retake?

Hi

I noticed they're many threads around here about this very question, but mine is a bit more of an extreme case. I got:

CR 700
Math 770
WR 580 (essay 6)

Now, the math was lucky, the 2 times I've taken a practice one I've got a 690 and 750. On the other hand my CR was low, I got a 800 and 750 those times. Writing is jumpy, 570+ to low 600s depending on the topic of my essay. As you may have guessed, I was able to 'get it' on this exams essay topic.

Now, to my knowledge after breaching the 700 range you dont need to worry too much, but the writing is crap. How much do they look at the writing portion? I saw old articles from 2007 saying they didnt but I dunno if its still the case.

I can provide more info like GPAs, ECs or about myself ( for one I'm in Turkey). I'm shooting for USC as a 'decent' chance school to get in and places like Stanford as a 'reach' school. If its not clear I'll clarify.
EDIT: Forgot to add that this was my 1st real attempt on the SAT.I know it makes sense to take it a 2nd time but I may want to use one of my 'shots' on some SAT subject tests since I dont have many chances left.

Thanks

Anyone have an opinion?

you should retake.

Yes…retake

You should retake if you still have time. Try to break a 650+. Schools may not put a significant weight on the writing section, but it’s still important to get a fairly decent score on it.

Just practice and drill those grammar rules, and read up on tips for writing the essays. As long as you understand the topic being asked in the question, you can make up and BS almost anything that pertains to it.

I’m in the same boat. I got 800 math, 730 CR and then a 680 writing. Most of my friends say not to worry. Still, a 580 is low. I would retake, but study the book like crazy beforehand.
