Most of the top colleges get the same applicants.. and Penn has 650-740, Stanford has 660-760, Princeton has 680-770, and JHU has 630-720.. so an upper number of 700 really seems low for Columbia

and if you notice, all those ranges are 90 - 100 points so clearly the 40 point range is incorrect....i dont know why this is still being discussed....i'm quite sure its supposed to be 660-760

there seems to be a slight misunderstanding on here from some people... the scores on Collegboard, are not applicants, or even admitted students, they are the 'first-year' students. i.e. the ones who end up going there.

anyway, the writing figures do seem a little bit odd, least of all because the IQR is 40 points, when normally it is 100.

Why are people so insane about SAT scores on this website?
Does it ever occur to anyone that some stupid test isn't the only thing that it takes to get into a good school. People might have low writing scores, but it is not like they are uneducated... they might have a great everything else.

Why question a "fact" printed on the site? You can't always assume someone made a typo.

Because they're simply wrong here and totally contrary to logic.

Yes, some people do badly on the writing test but are good writers, smart people, etc. But to believe that 75% of Columbia students can't get 700 on the writing test is inane.

Wow, im shocked at how much of a debate my post has caused. I think that these stats show that if a school doesn't care about it, look how low it can get. So, when colleges tell you that SAT scores don't matter, they obviously do. When they consider your math and cr, look how high they are. I don't think that it is a typo, because.... well... this is COLUMBIA isn't it? They would double-check anything that they might submit. If it is a legit typo, then that just looks bad on columbia's part. They should be more careful. Plus, this has been on the site for quite a while now, and it is still not corrected, leading me to believe that it is correct.

no i'd think they wouldnt care very much....u give them way too much credit, the fact that columbia is a good school has little to do with its administration.

everyone needs to calm down and stop debating it... it`s there everyone stating their perspectives wont change it... it does seem low but ooo well better luck for us the applicants

You just made this whole theory up on the basis that Columbia doesn't make mistakes because it's Columbia. The problem with these purported figures is that they are not "stats" and they do not "show" anything.

College Board is awful. I'm going to start using it as a last resort from now on as it's been wrong often lately with respect to acceptance rates, test ranges, etc.

I don't know how many I got wrong on MC (I got a 75) but I also got an 8 and got a 720.. first time I took it I got the same MC score but a 6 on the essay and got 680.

i think the weight of the essay depends on the average scores of everyone who took the test. My first one I got an 11 on the essay, 7 wrong on the Multiple Choice, and a score of 740. My second time I got a 9 on the essay, 2 wrong on the Multiple Choice, and a score of 770.

each 2 points you get on the essay = 40 points, so if you go from a 6 to an 8 with the same MC you will improve 40 points. I think if you go inbetween say, like a 6 to a 7 you get either 20 or 30 extra points, depending on the curve.
