I recently took the April ACT and got a 10 on the essay. Is it worth it to re-take the essay portion of the ACT? Will ACT Essay portion get you out of any classes in college with a 10 (I know it really depends on the specific schools, but I'm just asking on a general note)?

I got a 27 as the composite, so I will definitely have to retake that, but I'm not sure about the writing portion. If I don't take writing, I have more choices to take the ACT at testing centers close to my house for the June test. That's why I'm debating over whether to retake the writing portion or not. Sorry for rambling.

Check the schools you are planning to apply to: if they require the essay and do not superscore, they will not accept a score without writing (even if you already have a high score)…but check; each school may approach this differently

Do you think a 10 essay is decent or should I aim for a 11/12? Of course the higher, the better. But will a 10 differ much from a 11/12?

I think a 10 is fine, but as Rodney states, what matters is if the schools you are applying to require the writing section. If you were to take it again without the writing and score a 36 it wouldn’t be that helpful if the school required the ACT with writing. If you can find a testing center for June with writing that you can get to, I would try to make the effort to go there just to keep your options open with possible schools on your list.

So I wouldn’t be able to use my essay score from my previous April test, and the composite score from the June test to send to colleges even if I send my composite from April as well?

Also, is it possible to take the writing section after you take the main portion of the ACT sometime after? I think I’ve read that somewhere a while ago somewhere, or I can just be going crazy and making that up.

@absolutezero: not unless the university superscores. Here’s a list: [Colleges that super score ACT | College Admissions Counseling](<a href=“Colleges that superscore the ACT - BS/MD Admissions by College Admissions Partners”>Colleges that superscore the ACT - BS/MD Admissions by College Admissions Partners)

If you apply to a school not listed, they will only consider the best test with writing.

^ Thanks for the list.

If I register for ACT with no writing, and change it to the writing after I register, will it change my testing location (if ACT w/ writing option was full)?

absolute

it shouldnt, u should just be moved into a different classroom thats for act + writing. just call and confirm if u like.
