I've been receiving mixed messages about the new writing section in the SAT. Apparently, some believe that schools take little interest in the new section and just mainly weigh your Math and Critical Reading. Fact or fiction?

they wouldn't have supported the new SAT if they took little interest in the new writing section.

Most schools had no say regarding the new SAT. The University of California demanded the changes, and the company couldn't afford to lose their business. Many private schools are not impressed with the writing section and plan to use the next year or so to see how it correlates with the previous test. At this time, College Board has not correlated this test with the old SATII Writing. They may have a correlated scrore by spring.
Some schools, like Pomona, will download your essay and see if they agree with the scoring, and make up their own mind. Other schools may just use the CR and M portion. UCs, of course, will use the writing as part of their total score that you acrue by adding all tests together, but they will still place more emphasis on the gpa.

All you can do is just do the best you can on it and hope for the best.
