<p>It’s part of the SAT, and I believe they count it like the rest of the SAT.</p>
<p>That said, Brown has one of the largest mid-ranges of the Ivies for SAT scores, meaning that they take the SAT seriously, but won’t let it totally ruin an otherwise academically strong application.</p>

<p>According to this - <a href=“Office of Institutional Research | Brown University”>Office of Institutional Research | Brown University; - the middle 50% of the writing scores were both higher than the critical reading and of the same size (110 points from 25% to 75%). While studies have shown some correlation between the critical reading and writing scores on the GRE (and so probably some similarities on the SATs), if they didn’t consider the writing very much or at all, chances are the range of scores would be somewhat wider as a result.</p>
