I just got an email from Princeton telling me that I have been assigned a writing seminar in the fall semester. Anyone else get it?

Are there any writing seminars anyone recommend or are they all the same?

One funny thing I noted was that they stressed on the email soo many times that they expect you only to take 4 courses total in the fall quarter. Is it possible to take 5?

YES FALL IS THE BEST. W00T. you get a ton of vacation in the fall to get the papers done.

fall writing seminar here! woohoo!

I am getting mine changed from Spring to Fall. Cause of a BSE, that'll mean I have a freshman seminar in the Spring.

Darn, I got a fall seminar. That means I probably won't get to take maths this fall unless I change it to spring. Ack!

All the stresssing about "only 4 classes" is just because most Princeton students are used to going above the "recommended" requirements - many incoming freshmen think that, since 4 classes is the minimum requirement, they should go for more. Princeton classes are (much) harder than high school classes, and your first semester will also be a hectic one adjusting to a new school; don't think that you need to take more than 4.

That being said, however, it is definitely possible to take five (I did it my first semester). It really depends on what the classes are, your time management skills, if you'll be heavily into a sport, etc. It's sometimes better to sign up for five - if you can handle it, great; if not, you can choose one to drop. If you originally only sign up for 4, you have no choices (unless you want to start getting course deficiencies in first semester).

P.S. "I am getting mine changed from Spring to Fall. Cause of a BSE, that'll mean I have a freshman seminar in the Spring."
I don't understand what you're saying here... I was a BSE, and I took my freshman and writing seminars both in the fall.

Yea but i got phy103, mat103, and chem207 already booked for the fall. that leaves me with one extra space.

Spring seminar here. I wonder what they mean by a "compelling reason" to change terms. I guess I'll wait and see how my schedule turns out when I speak to my advisor Sept. whatever.

Why not take a different humanities class in the fall and then keep your writing seminar in the spring? Are you switching it to make room for a specific freshman seminar?

Actually, I just hear that taking the Writing Seminar in the fall is easier since there's more time to work on the big paper because there are more breaks and random time because of the weather outside in the fall term.

However, I like the Spring Freshman Seminars better. What effect does taking the Writing seminar in the fall have on Freshman seminars?

None (except that, obviously, if you take them at the same time you may have to re-arrange your other classes around them or take 5 classes)

I've been assigned to Spring semester.

D did writing seminar Spring Semester - really enjoyed it then. By second semester you have the routine of Princeton in hand and it's easier to focus.

Yeah, I mean...it's more of a joke during the spring since you've already been writing papers for a semester. While the second half of the semester can seem pretty packed since you have few breaks, it's not bad at all. Plus, it's getting warmer outside, things are blooming, etc., so the whole attitude changes.

For those of you who think freshman and writing seminars are some how correlated...they aren't. They have absolutely no bearing on one another. From what I understand, most of the people who are allowed to switch writing seminar semesters are like people in the Humanities Sequence since taking HUM + a writing seminar + two other classes in the spring would be a disaster for a lot of people (though some have done it).

But yeah, plan your schedule around your writing seminar and not the other way around since it's basically the only thing you're cemented into while at Princeton.

well... I may do integrated science not sure... Kinda weird, but I'm not sure whether to change it or not now.

i'm taking mine in the spring....does it even matter?

I'm taking mine in the fall.

what are the differences b/w freshmen seminar and writing seminar?
Are both required?
If not (i've been assigned to spring writing seminar), do i take the frosh seminar in the fall and writing seminar in the spring?

A writing seminar is required, a freshman seminar is not. A freshman seminar is not a writing-focused class, but is rather centered on whatever the topic of the course is. You apply for a freshman seminar whereas you're placed into a semester for a writing semester. It doesn't matter what semester you take your frosh sem in, since you can take both a writing and a freshman seminar in the same semester.

both writing and freshman seminar in the same semester? i thought the freshman seminar was in the fall.

so do most people (appx. what percentage) take the frosh seminar? and do ppl take both seminars in the same term?
