Looking for the opinion of someone who's already taken a writing seminar:

What's really the point of these? Is it worth taking at all if you aren't in A&S?

The goal of a writing seminar is to teach you how to write papers at the undergraduate level within the context of the subject/class you have chosen. In practice; however, they focus too much on the subject/class material, and too little on collegiate writing.

In my opinion, they are not worth taking unless you plan to transfer to A&S.

some of the writing seminars have terrific teachers and the small size can be a nice liberal artsy hour in your day as you get acclimated to Vandy. Our son loved his seminar teacher, the class had a very contemporary theme with interesting readings, and he later took another class with her and got a reference from her for a thing or two he applied for later. Best to look up teachers reps online a bit and to chat up the upperclassmen you know. By second term, you still get writing seminar offers I think and you will have more of a grapevine going re teachers that can be positive and unforgettable. I would say that my son has not had a bad teacher at Vandy. Whenever he stumbled, it was because he was overbooked, over-committed, and didn’t recognize the uptake in how much prep was required for class. All of his teachers have been quite impressive. welcome to Vandy
