Hello! I'm potentially applying to JHU early (going on an overnight in a few weeks to determine) as a Writing Seminars major. Obviously, I love writing -- fiction, poetry, plays, screenplays, everything and anything. What I'm most looking for in college is a literary community that will help my writing and me grow. Can anyone attest to the quality of the major? What are classes like? How is the faculty? Do WS majors feel lost in a more science-oriented school?

bump

We supposedly have an incredible writing seminars program. I’m not in humanities, but I’ve taken two courses in the major for my requirements, and I thought it was okay. I can’t attest to the strength of the literary community, but there are many opportunities to share your work and have it published. I will say that WS is relatively small compared to the rest of Hopkins…whether or not that makes you feel lost is probably up to you.

Hi nabokoving! Writing Seminars is actually one of the larger majors at JHU, and it’s a very common double major for people to adopt! JHU’s Writing Sems was recently ranked #2 in the nation by US News & World Report. I’m a Writing Sems student and the classes are incredible-- no more than 15 students, with ample opportunity to share and workshop your work. I’ve grown so much as a writer because there is constant opportunity to learn from your peers and professors. The classes are small seminar-style, and you end up bonding with your class, which makes it really fun AND helpful! I’ve only had positive experiences with the faculty. The intro-level courses are taught by Master’s Students in the program (who are awesome and talented), but then you have the opportunity to take courses with the department chair or professional writers (like Mary Jo Salter!) As for a literary community, there are so many chances to get involved. There are numerous literary magazines, poetry readings, etc, plus you end up bonding with your class over writing. Some of my closest friends here I’ve met through my writing courses!
