Writing Sentence Correction question (PSAT)

This question was on the October 20, 2007 Form S, section 5.

29

Nineteenth-century artist Rosa Bonheur won critical acclaim, A(particularly) B(for her) animal studies, and C(becoming) the first woman D(to receive) the Grand Cross of the French Legion of Honor. E(No error)

Answer was C; while taking it, I did feel that something was funky with C, but I just couldn't be sure. Could somebody just label the grammatical error, please? Thanks.

Rosa Bonheur won critical acclaim and became the first woman to receive the Grand Cross, not “won critical acclaim and becoming the first woman.”

or it could be “won critical acclaim, particularly for her animal studies, and FOR becoming the first …” parallel structure?

ahhh k…it is really strange. Something does sound awfully wrong with that sentence, but I couldn’t pick it out.

Thanks :)

Ordinarily you win critical acclaim for your work, not for awards you receive as a result of your work. So I wouldn’t think “Nineteenth-century artist Rosa Bonheur won critical acclaim, particularly for her animal studies, and for becoming the first woman to receive the Grand Cross of the French Legion of Honor” works as well as “Nineteenth-century artist Rosa Bonheur won critical acclaim, particularly for her animal studies, and became the first woman to receive the Grand Cross of the French Legion of Honor.”

C is the error
it should be BECAME
