Writing to a college professor

I have done a ton of research throughout HS so someone suggested me to write a letter to the college departments of science that I am interested in, or like a research professor at that college, expressing my interest in attending the college and telling them about my research.

Except I have no idea what to say. I mean, I'll definitely say I'm applying to college X and am interested in their research...but what else? Won't they wonder why I'm writing to them? Especially since I haven't even been accepted to the college yet?

The point is to get them to write to the admissions officers in my support, but do I explicitly tell them to do that? Or do they already know?

HELP PLEASE

I am also interested in hearing some suggestions for a situation like this.

bump…

Most college applications have space for extra supplements - include an explanation of your research (or a copy of a published paper if you have one) there, possibly with a letter of recommendation from the person with whom you’ve been doing research. It’s basically the same idea as an arts supplement, just with research. Don’t bother writing to professors - unless you’re on track to win a Nobel prize or something, they honestly won’t care that much, and definitely not enough to write a letter to the admissions department.
