Writing two essays when one is asked?

Hi,

The Yale supplement has a free-response question in which you can write up to 500 words. This is obviously one essay. But what if I want to write two roughly 250 word essays (one of them about one extracurricular activity that is very meaningful, and one about my academic interests and why I’m doing it)? Would that look discordant and disjointed?

Thanks.

I would just stick to what they ask for.

I think it would imply that either you can’t count or that you’re not good at following directions.

It’s their application; do it their way.

I agree with bjkmom. If a contest called for a recipe that would yield two dozen cookies, would you submit a recipe that made twelve ultra-large cookies? Or forty-eight smaller cookies? Of course not, as you would be disqualified. The same applies to Yale’s supplemental essay. Submit one essay of not more than 500 words.

They want 500 words so you can go into some depth, not so you can be superficial twice.

Well, it might be possible to write one essay that includes more than one example of what’s important to you, especially if they are related. Don’t write two mini-essays, though.

I agree with all of these, thank you. I think I was just being lazy and trying to reuse existing essays. I have, since, inspired myself enough to write something else.

However, @WasatchWriter, although it is often difficult to go into depth with less words, they do not imply superficiality. I have read very pithy, non-wordy, well done short essays.

Good to know.
