Wrong major, but same college. Should I notify them?

I was accepted into LS undeclared (everyone is undeclared, right?) I was looking through my app again and I noticed that on my UC app I accidentally specified that I was interested in Cognitive Sciences, but I want to do Computer Science (in LS). Is it a big deal?

No, it does not matter in L&S (where all entering freshmen enter as undeclared). Just take the prerequisite courses for the major you (now) want and declare (or apply to declare, if necessary) the major.

Thank you!

L&S won’t even retain your indicated preference of major - everyone is undeclared, plain and simple.

Most majors can be declared once you fulfill the requirements set by the department, but a few are capped and thus you are not guaranteed to get in. Out of 86 majors in L&S (depending on how you count them), 8 are currently capped - Practice of Art, Public Health, Operations Research and Management, Economics, Environmental Economics, Psychology, Social Welfare, and Media Studies.

Capped majors have set conditions and an application process that is akin to applying for admission to a college, usually with an essay. For example, declaring Public Health requires that you have earned a B- minimum grade in the class Bio 1B, taken all the listed pre-req classes, apply before you hit 80 earned units, and submit the application along with an essay.

Uncapped majors, on the other hand, have some conditions for declaring but mainly you just need to meet the pre-reqs and not be on academic probation, so essentially a guarantee you can get that major if you want it.

L&S CS apparently still has a [procedure for applying to the major](<a href=“CS Major Information | EECS at UC Berkeley”>CS Major Information | EECS at UC Berkeley), even though it is now uncapped.

Good point, ucbalumnus. Some majors do have more conditions on when they process the paperwork to put you formally in the major. Integrative Biology, for example, has a point based formula based on grades in the pre-req classes and while there is no cap on who can declare IB, you need a minimum number of points before their advisors will sign off on the declaration form. CS has its procedure. Still, for both, if you do the listed pre-req classes, and aren’t in some kind of academic or administrative trouble, you absolutely can get into the major.

Does that mean, that even if I were accepted to CS right now, I’d still need to reapply? Or is it guaranteed to be in the major as long as I meet the GPA and pre-reqs? (which honestly seem pretty simple. :))

If you need to “apply” or “declare” for a major, then that means you aren’t in it until they accept you.

I don’t think anyone is “guaranteed” to be in a major when you apply for L&S.
