W's on my transcript

Hi,

I'm going to apply to the different UC's this fall and I'm hoping to get into UCLA most. What I'm wondering is how much W's factor will factor into the admission decision on my application. Here's my short academic story.

I have 3 W's on my transcripts. One is in a nontransferable math class from my first semester. The second W is in a transferable class that had nothing to do with my major. I got this W in fall 2012. My third and final W was in a philosophy class, but this class isn't a prerequisite for my major. Given that I got two W's in two consecutive semesters, I'm kind of worried, especially about the philosophy class, even though it wasn't required. I have a 3.85 gpa and I'm in my school's TAP program. The average admitted gpa for philosophy is 3.56 as of fall 2012.

One would think this would be a slam dunk to get into UCLA with, but I am worried about these W's, and admittedly, I can't come up with a good reason for having them, other than biting off more than I could chew, academically speaking. Am I in a bad position here? Will UCLA and other UC's even see the W I got in a nontransferable math class? If so, will they care?

Thanks in advance.

Don’t worry about it. High GPA > W’s. I had 3 or 4 W when I applied.

I had 3 and I got in everywhere. It’s not going to be a problem

Thanks for the responses, guys. It puts my mind at ease…at least for now, lol.

Think of it like this. I have 9 Ws and a 3.3gpa and still got into UCSD. I only didnt get into UCLA because of my horrendous GPA (and an impacted major). I don’t think Ws matter too much.

Sent from my SCH-I605 using CC

I don’t think you should worry about 3 or 4 w’s. I have 9 and I was worried beyond belief that I wouldn’t be accepted to UCLA, but I did.

I talked to a few admission counselors, and they all said the same thing. Don’t worry about W’s, even if you have 20 of them. They don’t take W’s into account. They just pretend the W’s don’t exist on the transcript.

What are W’s?

Withdraws from a class.

Thanks again for the new responses, guys! I feel a lot better now. :P

Dude I have 8 W’s on my transcript and I’m applying to UCLA, UCSD, UCSB and UCB this fall, they don’t really care about them unless its like every single semester, then it looks like you’re taking on too much then just leaving it, don’t stress it too much, just explain it in your personal statement.

And with a 3.85 GPA for a philosophy major as long as you have the 2 English and 1 math requirement done by the end of fall you’re gold.

I’m hoping to get in to UCLA but my current GPA is a 3.083 and by end of summer should be a 3.18, and by end of fall should realistically be about a 3.3 for a scoiology major, so I’m hoping for UCLA but realistically I’m probably going to end up TAG’ing into UCSB, I had some trouble my first 2 semesters of college and didn’t really know what I was doing and got a bunch of C’s but once I realized what I wanted in life and got my **** together I started doing better, a lot better…at the start of last fall my GPA was a 2.11

I am going to be a senior now and so far i have a 4.2 in the UC grading scale. I have done community work in a hospital, summer camp for kids, assistant basketball coach for kids,
and i have started my own community service. I am also involved in various clubs and i am even a Vice President/co-founder of one.
For sports i am a varsity volleyball captain. I have join the academic decathlon team.I also have job experience. I have a 1600 in my sat and a 20 in my act. My only concern is that i got a C in my junior year. How will this Affect my admission??

If you write about that in your personal statement Matt4200, you might have a good chance of getting in. The UC’s are sympathetic towards that sort of thing, I’ve heard.

You have nothing to worry about.
