'W's on my transcript.

Hi CC,

As of now, I'm a sophomore with plans to transfer for Fall 2014. My GPA is in the 3.5+ range. Since the college I attend does not have a reputation for being extremely competitive, I definitely want to raise it to a 3.7+ before applying for more colleges/universities. I've been accepted into one local college and guaranteed admission into one out of state so far. My dream schools are a bit more competitive, though, and I'm really worried.

Over the past few weeks, my family has lost a member. Another immediate family member was in a car accident, and I've also been hospitalized. Now, I'm not sure how other CCs work across the country? We have two designations on transcripts for withdrawals. One shows it was student initiated, and the other shows if the professor kicked the student out.

If I didn't drop any classes, I'd have 56 at the end of this semester. If I do, I'll have between 48 and 53. The bright side is that even with 48, I'll be able to have 60 before transferring. The problem is if I drop more than one class, I'll become a part-time student. Since I started college I haven't taken a semester off, including two summers, but that probably means nothing.

This is getting long, but I guess my question is: Would one or two 'W's on my transcript ruin everything? As far as extra-curriculars and even essays, I think that aspect of my applications will be okay. I'm just freaking out about everything else.

If you read all of this and especially if you reply, I really appreciate it.

bump…

Anyone? Also, does it help if the 'W’s aren’t classes that are absolutely necessary?

I know everyone has a different situation but any input would be a big help.

I don’t think a few W’s will hurt you at all. If they ask, just tell them about your situation in the application. I had 1 ‘W’ in my college career and it didn’t hurt me getting admitted at all. You should be ok.

@smurray09 - Thank you! I definitely don’t want to drop unless I absolutely have no chance with the course. From looking around this site, it seems like a lot of users fall into the “perfectionist” category, so maybe I’m worried over nothing.
