I haven't found any thread about WTP 2013 so I decide to start one. Is any alum here? Any application tips?

Thanks!

Hey! I’m thinking of applying too
Do you think just sending PSAT scores would be enough? I took it last year and this year. I don’t have any science SAT II scores yet
Also, what science teacher are you asking to write your rec? I’m not sure whether I should ask my bio or chem teacher (im taking both this year).

Anyway, sorry for all the questions, but it’s nice to know that there’s someone else out there on the same boat! :)

Hey, I’m a WTP alum! Make sure that you a) have decent grades and b) come across as a nice person. Admissions is swayed strongly if you come across as unfriendly or snobbish, since the program encourages collaboration over competition. Also, while WTP says they don’t want students who have already been exposed to the material, there aren’t a lot of girls who are rejected for being overqualified. The easiest way to be classified as overqualified is by taking AP Computer Science.

Also, cookiemonster, don’t worry too much about SAT II or PSAT scores. My PSAT and SAT were decent, and I didn’t take my SAT II until after I was accepted. I did, however, have a 4.0 gpa (unweighted. weighted, 5.64) when I applied, and most other girls at the program were top 10 in their class, with a fair chunk of valedictorians. What will influence admissions the most is your grades and your personality.
For recommendations, don’t choose who writes your recommendation based on which subject the teacher taught; the subject makes no difference, so long as it’s math/science. I selected my math and science teachers based on my relationships with them. I would definitely advise selecting the teachers who know you best.

^thanks for the tips! ;)

Agreed, THANKS SO MUCH for the tips!! :D

haha, no problem. Also, I can’t respond to private messages until I post more, so I’ll answer questions here until I get that taken care of

Extra Curriculars:

Awards and such :

Mu Alpha Theta summer grant recipient (2011)

I can’t find the file for my essay, but once I track that down, I’ll let you know more about those. I can answer general questions about essays before I find it.

Oh wow you have amazing stats! Would it be fine if I don’t put any math/sci related EC down?

I have really good grades and pretty good test scores but my math teacher barely knows my name, let alone how I handle challenges or if I’m passionate about engineering (my sophomore teacher doesn’t teach at my school anymore so this is my only option). I know that I could write something brief to cover some personal stuff, but I can’t imagine that the evaluation will be strong at all.

Do you think it’s worth applying?

The other evaluation would probably be good, but not glowing or anything. I plan to apply to some other programs (that luckily do not require a math teacher rec) but those are even more selective, so I’m torn. I really don’t want to waste my time if I don’t have a real chance and I have a lot on my plate as it is. Any advice?

Chlobird - Don’t worry too much about the recommendation. There are girls who get accepted from large schools where the teachers aren’t well acquainted with each student. If a passion for engineering isn’t displayed, that won’t hurt you. The program isn’t looking for girls who are 100% set in engineering; rather, they want girls who aren’t sure about engineering but who are willing to check it out.

If you have good ECs, they’ll balance out the teacher recs. I would recommend applying, even if you’re not confident in your chances.

emmakxg - math/science ECs look good. If you have anything that shows that a) you like math/science and b) you’re capable of managing a demanding work load, include it.
If you don’t have anything math/science related, it won’t kill you, but you’ll have to be a bit stronger in the rest of the app

I m guessing it won’t hurt… Also I don’t know if any of you guys noticed that on part 1 there’s a part where you can put down name of a family/friend who is an MIT student/alum… I wonder why they wanna know what “friend” you have at MIT haha.

ME admits 20 girls while EECS admits 40. That being said, I think more girls apply for EECS. I checked off both, and indicated my preference.

How are you guys all doing with your apps? I can’t believe they’re due tomorrow!!! excited and nervous /:

I actually just submitted mine. Procrastinator forever. Which track did you apply to?

Hi! I actually submitted mine 10 minutes before it was due (HAHA!) but I poured myself into writing the essays and presenting what I felt was a passionate and inquisitive person (though I think the “why WTP” one felt a little bit forced and artificial…hopefully the adcom doesn’t see that).
I didn’t have a prefernce to either one (though I heard that there was more competition for the…mechanics one I believe (I could be wrong))

Let’s hope we all get in.
Fingers crossed for April 19th…

I didn’t specify a track preference either. I really have no idea what to expect as far as my chances, because no one from my school has done this program in recent years, but I think I have a pretty strong app. Good luck to everyone (: fingers crossed!

:) Yeah I really hope we all get it! Honestly, I don’t even remember what I put for track preference… I think I either put no choice or EECS, haha… I really want to do this program!!!
