Wtp @ mit 2012?

WOMENS TECH PROGRAM AT MIT
There are around 269 applicants. 60 of them get accepted.
What do you guys know about it? Are any of you applying? If anyone did it-- how did they get in? Did they have stellar grades?

I applied this year! :)

Check out last year’s WTP thread if you haven’t already: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/1059726-wtp-2011-a-9.html

Oh okay. Oh my goodness. 2 more days!!!

I got in!! I am so excited! Did anyone else here get in?

Just got my acceptance letter!! I’m pretty excited. What track are you guys? (I’m doing EECS)

I just got in as well. I’m in EECS :)

The program is mainly for high school juniors who want to be exposed to new material in electrical or mechanical engineering.

Taken from my rejection letter: "WTP has very different acceptance criteria than MIT: some students are not accepted to WTP because they have already covered some of the WTP curriculum, or have had opportunities to explore engineering or science in other programs, or are already relatively certain that they want to pursue engineering in college. The goal of WTP is to introduce students to engineering and computer science who have not had prior exposure to these fields. As such, some students who may be excellent candidates for admission to MIT or other top college engineering and computer science programs do not appear to need the opportunities provided by WTP and thus are not admitted to WTP. "

Congratulations to you gals who were accepted! One of my friends went to the program last year, and she had a blast and learned a lot. She’s a senior now, and she’s going to MIT next fall for engineering (obviously) :)

I am in the EE/CS track too.

I got into EECS as well, but I’m going to YSP instead. Congrats to everyone else who got in! We’re all going to have awesome summers~

Congrats to all of you that have gotten accepted! I am very interested in applying to wtp next year :-). Would you please post your stats (Test Scores, Grades, Class rank, and any other info that they ask for on the application) so I know if i have a realistic chance of getting in. Thanks so much :-)

Hi guys!
I got selected for the EECS track!
So I was wondering if you guys were interested in joining a Facebook group for WTP 2012; I saw the one for 2010 and I thought it was a neat way to meet each other ahead of time.

Just let me know and I’ll start the group.

Congrats to everyone who got selected!

A Facebook group would be awesome.

Here’s the Facebook group!

I did WTP/ME and had an amazing time! I’m going to be a freshman at MIT in the fall, so feel free to post/message me with any questions!

I have seen a lof people who said they have done WTP and say they are going or will go to MIT and heard that 70% or so of WTP students got into MIT (I think this was an old fact). Do a lot of WTP students end up at MIT, or is this just a coincidence?

@spotical: It really depends. Pretty much everyone loved WTP, as I recall. However, some wanted something different for their college experiences. At least two of of my WTP-ME friends applied ED to schools other than MIT and got in. I don’t have the exact numbers of how many of us applied, but I know 6 got in from ME and ~20 from EECS. I got in EA.

Keep in mind that WTP is looking for students who have had little to no experience in engineering, and that is the main difference in WTP’s and MIT’s selection criteria. I know I wondered whether I would get into MIT the next year, and I do believe the WTP recommendation letter I received positively impacted my application. I also wrote a little blurb in the “additional information” section of my MIT application about WTP, and it really showed why I fell in love with MIT.

WTP will show you a part of the MIT experience, and a portion of the college experience as well, but it is in no way a guaranteed ticket into MIT. That being said, the 30-50% acceptance rate certainly kicks the butt of 11%/9% EA/RD acceptance rate!

Here are the history and stats:
WTP-EECS: from 2002-2011, 386 students attended WTP-EECS. Of those 386, 339 applied to MIT, 233 were accepted, and 165 came to MIT (43% of the total number of alumnae). The range has been 30%-55% attending MIT over those 10 years.
WTP-ME started in 2006 and 118 have attended. Of 118, 101 applied to MIT, 50 were admitted, and 32 attended MIT (27%). The range has been 10% to 47% attending MIT over 5 years.
