Hi!! I noticed there wasn’t a page for applying to WTP this year so I decided to start it. I’m a 2019 alumna and was actually just adMITted! I did WTP in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and it was definitely one of the most fun, educational, and life changing experiences. I wouldn’t be thinking of engineering as a career, or even of MIT, without this program. Feel free to ask me any questions about the application or program!
Congrats on your MIT acceptance!! I’m applying for the ME track and I’m wondering how competitive it is. I know that the acceptance rate is low, but how competitive are the other applicants? Like do you have to do something extraordinary to get in, or do you think that letting your passion shine through your essays is enough? Thanks!!
hi, so I really do think the most important things are the essays. Of course they want to make sure that you will be able to keep up in the classes, as they’re pretty hard, but they are most of all looking for excited and passionate students who will make the most of the opportunity. You don’t have to do anything crazy like go to a state olympiad or anything like that. All of my EC’s were through my school or community based. My friends were all involved in some pretty cool ECs, but no two people had the same profile
Also you don’t need calc some girls hadn’t taken it yet and it’s not used in the classes.
How did you go about responding to the 2nd essay question about how your interest in math, science, and/or engineering influences the way you interact with the world? I’m a little confused about what the question is asking. Thanks!
@Guineapigs1 So this question is really just trying to see your passion and interest in STEM. It’s asking the question why do you like STEM and the particular subjects you like within it, how did you encounter these things, and how do they have an influence on how you see the world? I think the last part is the trickiest. I really would recommend asking a family member or friend if they’ve seen you use STEM in your life, they might surprise you! For that part, I wrote about the laws of physics, how incredible I thought it was that matter moves in an ordered way, and then how I would see the phenomenons I learned in physics all around me. Some people talk about how STEM has made them a better problem solver and stuff and I think that works really well too! hope this helps this got very long lol
hello! this is pretty late but does being “more privileged” give you a lower chance of getting in? like you have parents who went to college or something like that…
okay thanks! i’m just stressing too much abt this i think… i really want to get in !! is it significanly harder to get into the ME track? (i’m just applying for ME)
Hi! I’m kinda late to the game (applications are due tonight!) but I’m a 2019 ME alumna and also recently admitted to MIT. The program coordinator told us that ME can actually be harder to get into some years because the rise of computer science courses in schools across the nation, but don’t let that deter you from applying! Just make sure your essays reflect yourself, your interests, your quirks, etc., like a genuine and honest representation of who you are and what you want to get from attending WTP. Good luck!
