You have Lewis and Clark in the list. How about Oregon State University? They are also part of WUE although it is competitive. When my kid was offered the WUE the letter read it was given to the top 10% of eligible applicants.
Oregon State also has another scholarship my D received which took $10k off the OOS COA. Not as lucrative as WUE but brought cost to $38k COA.
You may also want to consider: Willamette, Univ of Portland, University of Puget Sound and Pacific University (in suburb of Portland not UOP in Stockton, CA).
i’ll look harder. i had some vague reason for scratching it - not sure if the big athletic ra-ra culture is his jam - or maybe only some programs are covered under WUE and not his areas? can’t recall. we actually have close family in west linn just over an hour away from corvallis which is a nice thought. we will look closer at OSU. one thing is for sure: this kid needs mountains nearby - backpacking is his thing.
more info here (also says those who don’t get WUE might get provost scholarships)
That’s right! It’s definitely much more affordable to out of state students than University of Oregon.
I believe it is a great school. My kid has an older friend from her school marching band majoring in a forestry related major at Oregon State and she has been extremely happy.
I think University of Oregon is the one with the athletic rah rah culture? They have a partnership with Nike, and it pervades the campus and town.
oops! this ignorant native californian has to educate herself on all things oregon!
Perhaps University of Hawaii - Manoa? It is near plenty of places to hike. However, it is in a more urban or suburban area (the urban or suburban areas go right up to the hiking trails, forests, and mountains).
I get you. I am an immigrant. I had to educate myself on a whole lot more than all things Oregon!
we know a couple of students who went there on WUE in my eldest’s year. it’s getting very popular with san francisco public school students. they have some stellar programs (i recall something about astronomy?). i think it’s too urban for my second, though. he’s ready for something exotically country after growing up in gritty SF.
Yes, especially for football but Oregon St is in the same athletic conference and has big time athletics as well (albeit teams usually are not very good).
University of Hawaii - Hilo is a smaller campus (~3k students) in a smaller city (~44k population). However, it has a more limited number of academic programs.
University of Utah has a lot of outdoor activities nearby. Not WUE but after the first year students can qualify for in state residency and tuition so cost wise over 4 years might work for you.
is it possible that U of Utah is WUE? it says for fall 2023? it does offer a lot!

Just to clarify, I assume you are pointing out the option to attain in-state residency. I’m pretty sure UofU is also WUE eligible for a lot of majors. That may be the route for those who don’t want to live there in the summer to establish residency.
If Utah is under consideration, consider whether the net price over the whole time to bachelor’s degree is lower with WUE versus OOS first year followed by gaining Utah residency, and whether the latter is not too much of a hassle for the student (Utah is one of the least difficult states for OOS college students to gain residency for tuition purposes).
It looks like it is WUE. I apologize, I thought it wasn’t and didn’t take the time to review.
You may want to investigate which is better: WUE or qualifying for in-state residency, or if they can be combined!
You’re right! I was too hasty in my initially post.
the language on the site seemed to imply it might be new: “fall of 2023…” anyway, i’m sure schools and programs slide in and out of WUE status as programs become more or less in demand by residents. all good.
I believe it’s one or the other. If you accept WUE, you remain as such for the remainder of your degree.
So then I guess it makes sense to see if wue x 4 is better or worse than OOS for first year and in state for 3 years, given the rules related to straining in state status.
