WUSTL Class of 2017 Questions Thread

@shandsy7

Don’t worry, a C will not get you rescinded. Didn’t happen to me, but have not heard of it ever happening.

@LMLohio

I’m not extremely familiar with any of them, but they all are well regarded. BME especially has a reputation for being very challenging.

shandsy7, you could basically get all C’s and still not have your admission rescinded…

Ok. I was asking because I heard of NU applicants getting their offers rescinded over C’s, but I highly doubt there’s any basis to that.

BME is top notch at WashU, one of the strongest engineering programs we have. ChemE I’m less familiar with, but there is still a sizeable number. I do know that WashU chemistry tends to be on the more rigorous side.

Is there a weekend in the Spring when admitted students are invited to the campus as a preview weekend of sorts?

I don’t believe there is a special weekend for admitted students to visit; housing hundreds of extra people would be challenging to say the least. I think you simply schedule a normal campus visit. That being said, they do have special activities during the spring for admitted students who are visiting campus. I believe they send you that info with your acceptance? Additionally, there are specific summer weekends in which admitted students are encouraged to visit.

Is the general conscious that decisions will come out about March 8th?

I wouldn’t presume to have any idea about that, haha. I think they came out at a similar date last year though, so that seems reasonable.

Congrats to those accepted RD. Ryan started this thread after ED acceptances. I thought I would bring it back for RDs could ask questions. Several current WashU students will answer your questions. Post away!

Thanks for doing this. D was accepted yesterday. I think she (we) were a little surprised - WashU is so unpredictable. She is very qualified but these boards are full of amazing students who were WL or rejected. I think she lost a little momentum towards WashU with other EA acceptances, etc. so…

I’ve seen conflicting info on revisit days. Does an accepted students revisit program exist?

As for specifics can anyone speak to how strong the Spanish program is. It could be a major but definitely a minor. I saw some info on language on this thread earlier but nothing too specific.

Finally I wonder if any of you dealt with concerns about school spirit before picking WashU? I feel like that will be my D hangup. Its not just about sports but other places that have great academics have D1 sports to rally around. Do things exist that tend to bring the school together and foster a school spirit thing…or is it more of a we all are in this amazing academic environment (which is a great thing) and thats enough.

…athletes…

My D got her acceptance yesterday but it was bittersweet. Wash U has been her first choice for college since she was in 8th grade but she is not in the running for any type of merit scholarship from Wash U. She has been offered much merit based support from other schools. Our family will not qualify for need based aid but there is no way we can afford full tuition at Wash U. Does anyone know if all the merit based money has been allocated or have suggestions of how she might advocate for herself for some type of assistance. Wash U. is her first choice and I am trying to figure out a way to make it happen for her. Thanks for any suggestions.

^TDOC55,
We are in a similar situation. Although if my son real, real wants to go to WUSTL we will make it work somehow. What I have heard elsewhere is that if your daughter has strong stats and in general an outstanding student but just didn’t make the Danforth cut-off etc that you can write a letter to admissions (use the contact in her Pathway acceptance section) stating that you received merit based aid from other schools (mention the amount and school). Explain that WUSTL is by far her first choice but to make it possible she would request further consideration for merit based aid. It cannot hurt, and if done with the best intentions won’t seem inappropriate at all. Good Luck!

And for a real specific question does anyone know if WUSTL has a club field hockey team and program. I’ve seen a few club listings that say yes and a few that say no…

I know this is a terrible question and I should probably already know the answer to it by now, but I’m just going to ask anyway and try to move on.

I got rejected from Wash U yesterday (not WL’ed, rejected) and I’m pretty sad because it was my top choice. I showed tons of demonstrated interest, though I stopped short of handwriting them a letter saying how I would go if I was accepted (I wish I did that). Is there anything I can do at this point, or should I just cut my losses and move on? Also, do you know how hard it is to transfer into Wash U? Can you transfer after a semester or do you have to wait a year? I hope I like where I end up going enough that I don’t want to transfer, but I just keep remembering why I love Wash U.

Some colleges have really strict grading curves. In general, is it difficult to receive A’s or does Wash u./ olin business school deflate grades?

Aerobug…move on…there are 10,000 kids on waitlist ahead of you. Wash U is a very nice school, but there are a lot of very nice schools out there.

Does anyone know how hard/rigorous pre-med is? I feel like I got into Wash U on a whim, and I’m not sure if I could handle the rigor of the classes there. Any suggestions? I struggled a lot with Chemistry in high school, and I’m wondering if I’ll have any chance at getting into med school if I go to Wash U

Pre-med is hard. If you struggled with high school chemistry, you’ll probably struggle with gen chem, biology, and organic chemistry at Wash U. There are resources to help you succeed, but it’s very difficult work.

Okay…yeah that’s what I was afraid of hearing. So is it very deflated and a lot of work? How are the grading curves?
